Jah Wobble is a bassist, known for his work in the post-punk and world music scenes. Who found fame as a founding member of Public Image Ltd (PiL), the influential post-punk band led by Johnny Rotten (formerly of the Sex Pistols). He played bass on PiL’s first few albums, including their groundbreaking 1978 album Public Image: First Issue.
His bass style is unique—heavy, rhythmic, and often experimental—using deep, throbbing tones that are instantly recognizable. He left PiL in 1980, but continued to have a diverse and eclectic career, blending genres like dub, jazz, world music, and ambient music. He formed the band Jah Wobble’s Invaders of the Heart, which incorporated a variety of influences, from reggae to electronic to Indian music.
Over the years, Wobble has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Brian Eno, Sinéad O’Connor, and The Edge from U2. His music often carries a distinctively spiritual or philosophical vibe, blending political and introspective themes.
Wobble’s solo work and his collaborations in the 80s and 90s helped shape the genre of world music, and he’s considered a key figure in the development of post-punk and alternative music.
